I did a backpacking trip of the timberline trail in early September one year, it was really pretty. You can hear the glacier crack and echo down between the ridges.
This is a volcanic feild that gets really swampy and flooded. I went on a backpacking trip there with my roomate one time in october, and there was a lot of wading through ankle-high water. My roomate's backpack and dog got wet during a wind storm and I thought there was a real chance we could die. Overall it was a fun trip.
I went here with my mom for her birthday one time, it was really nice! You can drive up and don't need to hike if you don't want to. There were a lot of cyclists on the road up.
